How to Choose the Correct VFD for a 100kW Motor?

If you are here, you are probably looking for a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for a 100kW motor. Maybe you are building a pump station, upgrading a conveyor system, or supplying a control panel for a client.

You might think, "Any 100kW VFD will work, right?"

Wrong.

Choosing the wrong VFD for a 100kW motor is not just about the motor failing to start. It is about unexpected shutdowns, blown capacitors, and a repair bill that could have bought you a second VFD. Worse, it means telling your best client, "Sorry, the shipment is delayed because we fried the drive."

Let us make sure that does not happen.

As a manufacturer specializing in drives from 0.75kW to 630kW, we have seen every mistake in the book. Here is the checklist you actually need to get this right.

1. The "Nameplate Trap" (It is Never Just 100kW)

You see "100kW" on the motor, so you order a "100kW VFD." Done.

But wait: Look at the motor nameplate again.
Full Load Amps (FLA): This is the real boss. A 100kW motor at 380V draws a different current than a 100kW motor at 690V. Always match the VFD's output current to the motor's FLA, not just the power rating.
Our Guarantee: Our drives are rated for heavy-duty applications. Even if your motor runs at 110% load temporarily, our IGBT modules can handle the surge without tripping.

2. The Application Lie: Pump vs. Crusher

What is your 100kW motor actually doing?

If it is a Pump or Fan (Centrifugal Load): You need a standard VFD. It is easy on the drive.

If it is a Crusher, Mixer, or Centrifuge (Constant Torque/Heavy Duty): You need a VFD that is oversized or specifically rated for heavy duty.

The Mistake: Using a light-duty pump drive on a heavy rock crusher. The current spikes will destroy the drive within weeks.

Our Solution: Our 100kW units come with dual rating (Light Duty / Heavy Duty). For a crusher, we automatically recommend the Heavy Duty mode setting and can even pre-set the parameters for high starting torque before shipping.

3. Environmental Ignorance (The Silent Killer)

A VFD generates heat. A 100kW VFD generates a lot of heat.

Where will it sit? In a nice, air-conditioned control room? Or in a dusty panel in the Middle East sun?

Derating: If your ambient temperature hits 50°C (122°F), a standard "100kW" drive might only be able to output 80kW safely before overheating.

Our Advantage: We build with 110% rated components. Our cooling fans are industrial grade, not consumer grade. We also offer models with conformal coating (a special protective layer) if your drive is going into a humid or dusty environment. Ask us about the coating option—it saves drives from sudden death.

4. Hidden Features You Didn't Know You Needed

Built-in PID Controller: If you are controlling pressure (water supply), our drive has a built-in controller. You don't need to buy an extra PLC.

Modbus RTU Standard: Almost all modern factories want the drive to talk to a central computer. Our drives come with standard RS485 communication ports. Just plug and play.

Trip History: When the drive trips at 3 AM, our display tells you exactly why it tripped (Over voltage? Over current? Over heat?). You fix it fast. Your boss is happy.

Why Buy From Us?

  1. You aren't just buying a 100kW VFD. You are buying sleeping well at night.

  2. Factory Direct: We are the guys making it. If you have a problem, you talk to the engineer who knows the product, not a sales agent reading from a script.

  3. Custom Labeling: Need your company logo on the drive? We can do that. You look like the big boss to your customers.

  4. 24/7 Technical Support: We know 3 AM emergencies happen. We are here.

Our company will personally:

✅ Double-check your sizing to make sure you aren't buying something too small (or paying for too big).

✅ Send you a detailed datasheet and the actual dimensions (so you know if it fits your panel).

✅ Give you our best factory-direct price with 18 months warranty.
